Hastings Mutual Insurance Company

It was during tornadoes in 1880 and 1882 that struck a town called Hastings, Michigan when much property was damaged that a local farmer, DW Rogers decided that something must be done. His brother, Jeremiah Rogers, a state legislator, sponsored a bill that became law in February 1885 making it legal for Windstorm Insurance Companies.

In 1885 The Michigan Mutual Tornado Cyclone and Windstorm Company was incorporated. This company was based in Hastings, Michigan. By 1908 the company had grown from having 160 policyholders to having 43,000. By 1925 it was the second largest windstorm insurance company in the world. It continued to thrive through the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s.

In January 1959 it became Hastings Mutual Insurance Company and documents weighing around four tons had to be rewritten to allow for the change.

It has now been in existence for over 100 years, kept going by its reputation and good customer service plus it being a company with good finances.

The head office is in Woodlawn Avenue, Hastings, Michigan. The building was erected in 1960 and has been expanded twice since to accommodate the growing company.
